When you arrive at Talking Leaves you will be greeted by a Career Preparation Instructor. He or she will assist you with your initial needs. Student assistants will also be on hand to assist you. Career Preparation phase is 8 weeks.  You will meet with your instructor each day for the first four weeks you are on center. In Career Preparation you will gain knowledge of many areas of the Job Corps program which will broaden your job skills and educational opportunities. Career Preparation will cover such things as: cultural diversity, wellness, leadership, employability, initial testing for language arts, math, and GED, budgeting, social skills, and information technology. At the end of the four weeks, you and your teammates will enjoy a special luncheon at a nearby restaurant.

Your fifth week on center you will visit three vocational choices to assist you in further deciding your career. Each vocational visit will be 1 1/2 days. On the last day you will meet again with your Career Preparation instructor to make a final vocation selection.

During your time in Career Preparation you will be given a TABE test. These tests measure your reading and math skills and are used to properly place you in High School Program, GED program or vocational enrichment class. You may also be given three of the five GED pretests to further assess your abilities.
