    Talking Leaves Job Corps Center is operated by the Cherokee Nation for the Department of Labor, Office of Job Corps.Authorized staffing is 102 full time and part time staff. The Center is in continued operations twenty four hours per day, seven days a week, and fifty two weeks are year. Students are allowed two periods of annual leave or breaks of fifteen days each for winter and summer - around Christmas and Independence Day.

    New groups of students, usually numbering around ten, arrive each week and are initiated into the first phases of starting careers and life long learning.  Admission Counselors recruit, screen and arrive new students primarily from Oklahoma and some from other states. Preference for enrolling Native American students and employment Native American staff is practiced.

    Career Preparation Period is the first sixty days a student is on Center and is a period where students are inducted into center life and participate in learning work groups to enhance employability and information technology skills. During this period they will select a trade in which they will train, start the process for acquiring a drivers license, and enroll in math and grammar classes to enhance skills or GED preparation classes. The My Personal Employment Plan (MyPEP) is initiated by Career Skills Instructors, Center Counselors (Case Managers), and Career Advisors and is the document used to track student progress in all aspects of their Job Corps on Center careers (pre separation) and after securing employment (post separation).

    Career Training Period begins with students’ entrance into the trade classes and continues until students achieve trade skills, enhanced adult education and employability skills, if needed, a drivers license and an Oklahoma High School Diploma.  Sixty days prior to students completion these skills, Center Counselors will begin the transition phase of the students into the next phase and notify the students’ Career Advisor who begins the job search processes.

    Career Transition Period begins sixty days prior to completion of trade skills and other skills as may be required for employment. Career Advisors completes or updates with students the MyPEP sections relating to job search and other information needed for assisting students in maintaining careers. Assistance is provided by the Career Advisors for a period of twelve months.

    Students are encouraged to seek paid employment after the duty day (8:00 am - 4:00 pm) or paid work based learning during the duty day. Talking Leaves Center employees student workers, paid jobs, as cafeteria assistants, drivers, custodians, and telephone receptionists.  Student government employees student workers as retail sales clerks in the Student Store. Employed students are expected to save eighty percent of those salaries for use during the Career Transition Period for job search and other needs for securing employment prior to receiving their separation bonus of $1,200.
